The One That Got Away (Kalijah)
*American Gothic*
Summer after high school when we first met
We’d make out in your Mustang to Radiohead
And on my 18th Birthday
We got matching tattoos
Used to steal your parents’ liquor
And climb to the roof
Talk about our future
Like we had a clue
Never planned that one day
I’d be losing you
It was a dismal night at the Mikaelson place, as Elijah stood in front of her. She’d asked him to choose where they stood, but he didn’t feel like he had time to choose, because he felt like he had to follow Klaus to New Orleans. So, though he wasn’t choosing, he had to cut ties to Mystic Falls, which meant he had to leave, whether it broke both of their hearts or not.
“It’s our turn, Elijah. Please,” she pleaded, when he’d told her that he was leaving.
“Katerina.” He rested a hand on the side of her face, looking at her. Then he kissed her on the forehead. “Goodbye, Katerina.”
A moment later, he was gone.
*Dead Man On Campus*
In another life
I would be your girl
We’d keep all our promises
Be us against the world
In another life
I would make you stay
So I don’t have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away
I was June and you were Johnny Cash
Never one without the other, we made a pact
It was a dismal night, as a human Katherine drove a car she’d hot-wired, towards New Orleans. She needed Elijah. Even if he couldn’t save her with help from a New Orleans witch, at least she’d have him there with her in her last days or however long it took for her to die. She was dying of old age and she needed help, even if the Augustine Vampire Society said that there wasn’t a way to stop it. She was determined not to die, no matter the cost, as long as Elijah wasn’t hurt in the process. She needed him now more than ever, so she was going to go find him in New Orleans. She just hoped that together, they would find a way to save her life.

Sometimes when I miss you
I put those records on (Whoa)
Someone said you had your tattoo removed
Saw you downtown singing the Blues
It’s time to face the music
I’m no longer your muse
But in another life
I would be your girl
We’d keep all our promises
Be us against the world
She knocked on the plantation house door, having found out from an old witch friend, Sophie, where they were staying at. She hoped that this wasn’t a mistake.
When the door opened, she was relieved that it was Elijah that had opened it. She assumed Klaus must be busy with plotting against Marcel and Rebekah was probably doing something else. She was thankful for that.
“Katerina?” he inquired, shocked to see her human. “What has happened?”
“Long story. Sort of. Right after you left, I thought it was partly Elena’s fault you left, so I took it out on her and tried to kill her and she shoved the cure down my throat. Now I’m dying of old age rapidly. I went to an expert on vampires, but he said that it can’t be stopped. I was hoping there may be a way to stop it, anyway. I have a friend, Sophie. Right now I’d rather not be in Mystic Falls. This is the safest place for me right now. That, and I have a lot of enemies. I know you don’t trust me after what I did as a vampire the last time we saw each other, but I need your help and your protection. You may not trust me, but I know you wouldn’t wish me dead,” she explained and also tried to convince him.
When she told him everything, he knew she was telling the truth. He also knew that she was afraid now that she was human, knowing that she had way too many enemies to even count. He knew that he had to help her. He wanted to help her. Even though he left and though he didn’t trust her, he did still love her. She was right. He didn’t wish her dead. He didn’t know what pieces would be left of him if she died. He’d spent 500 years looking out for her. He didn’t know what he’d do without needing to do anything for her. No matter what happened, he was going to protect her with his life. If anyone wished her harm, they would be struck down just as he’d done to any enemies in past centuries.
“Of course, Katerina. I promise you, I will protect you. I will always protect you. Come in.” He stepped aside.
She walked inside.
He closed the door.
In another life
I would make you stay
So I don’t have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away
The o-o-o-o-o-one
The o-o-o-o-o-one
The o-o-o-o-o-one
The o-o-o-o-o-one
The one that got away
After they’d gone to Sophie for help, Sophie had finally found a spell to reverse the aging so she wouldn’t age rapidly. Only at a human pace of aging. So, all was well. Kat and Elijah even got back together after rekindling their relationship.
